Mykolaiv - city in southern Ukraine, the administrative center of the Mykolaiv region. The city is located in the south of the steppe zone of Ukraine. It occupies the peninsula which is washed by the waters of the Southern Bug and Ingul.
The area of the city is about 260 km2.
Due to its convenient location, Mykolaiv region was inhabited since the ancient times. The Scythians and Sarmatians lived there at the beginning of our era. The Greeks also built their colonies here.
Archaeologists claim that the current site of Mykolaiv used to be the location of the capital of the Cimmerian and Scythian state 3000 years ago.
The modern city was founded in 1789 by Prince Grigory Potemkin.
Initially it was built as a shipyard, and in the XIX century became the center of shipbuilding and management of the Black Sea Fleet.
Shipyard at that time was called differently: Ingul shipyard, Shipyard on Ingul, Ust - Ingul.
The first ship left the shipyard in 1790. It was a 46- gun frigate "Saint Nicholas." This was the beginning of the warship manufacturing in Mykolaiv, while shipbuilding became the main industry in the city.
The majority of enterprises that have been created in the city belonged to the military-industrial complex. This is why Mykolaiv was closed for foreigners for many decades.
Despite its industrial background, Mykolaiv has numerous historical and architectural monuments.
There are multiple sites of interest, that attract lots of guests who come to the city.
Mykolaiv is known for its Yacht Club, the oldest in Ukraine, where the world-class yachtsmen are trained and international regattas take place.
Reportedly, the longest pedestrian street in Ukraine - Soborna Street - is located in downtown Mykolaiv.
Mykolaiv zoo is one of the best zoos in Ukraine and obviously it is among the top city attractions.
“Kazka” ("Fairy Tale" in English) is the name of the children’s cultural and entertainment center which brings lots of joy to the local children with its side shows.
Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory was established in 1820. It is one of the oldest astronomical observatories in the southern part of Ukraine.
Naval Boulevard is a beautiful historical site on the Ingul river in Mykolaiv with unique views .
The city boasts a large number of beautiful parks and churches, museums and galleries, hotels, cozy restaurants and cafes.
The town was named in commemoration of the victory over the Turks in 1788. The Turkish fortress of Ochakiv was taken on the day of the patron saint of ships and sailors - St. Nicholas.
